Alexandra Falls and the iTravelCanada Photo Contest

I never ask much from the readers of It’s About Travelling and this little request really isn’t much. I’ve entered a photo of Alexandra Falls in Canada’s Northwest Territories in the iTravel2000 #itravelCanada Photo Contest. All I ask for is your vote. You see, the grand prize is a $1,500 gift card with the host travel company for travel anywhere within Canada. No doubt, you can see how valuable this would be to a guy who thrives on photographing and writing about unique travel locations within his own country.

Vote here: Alexandra Falls Image

Voting closes at the end of June, 2017 so please vote as soon as possible. Also, I believe sharing the image at the voting page will result in additional votes.

About The Photo

alexandrra falls northwest territories canada hay river

This image of Alexandra Falls was taken on July 4, 2016. The waterfall is located on the Hay River in Canada’s Northwest Territories, just upstream from Louise Falls in Twin Falls Territorial Park. The location is not far from the town of Hay River and over 1,000 kilometres north of Edmonton, Alberta.

What makes this photo unique is that it’s a long exposure image taken at around midnight. Why is that so unique? The exposure is just 1.3 seconds. In more southern parts of North America, like Southern Ontario, for instance, an exposure of 1.3 seconds at midnight in a nature setting would reveal a black image. It would take 30 seconds to several minutes just to get what’s pictured above.

Because Alexandra Falls is so far north, the sun doesn’t officially set until well after 11 pm in early July and the twilight persists until morning. “Morning” comes just a few hours later when the sun rises in what most would describe as still the middle of the night.

The colour of the water was unique for that place in time, as well. The Hay River was a chocolate brown colour when we arrived. The water was high and tumultuous. Heavy rains had persisted upstream in northern Alberta and British Columbia for the week(s) before and this resulted in high water in much of the Northwest Territories’ waterways.

Thanks again in advance for taking a second to boost my chances!
