Night Images of Orangeville, Ontario

Update June 10, 2018

Wow. Looking back nearly six years at these photos, it’s nice to see the photography skills have (definitely) progressed! We’ve recently (2018) published an article on Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville. Take a look, some of the shots are even quite decent.. Check it out here: Island Lake Conservation Area.

Last week, we featured night images of my hometown of London, Ontario. This week, we’ve got some night photos of my home since 1995, Orangeville, Ontario.

Orangeville is a town about an hour northwest of Toronto, at the junction of highway 9 and highway 10. The population is around 28,000 and it is the seat for Dufferin County.

Other than being home to a ‘Keystone Cop’ police force and the site of many a bizarre murder, Orangeville is mainly a bedroom community for the Greater Toronto Area. The population has more than tripled since 1971 as the word ‘commuter’ became more and more popular.

The following images are one to three minute exposures taken with the Canon Rebel T3i and slightly enhanced with Photoshop Elements.

This is the cenotaph at Alexandra Park, behind the town hall in downtown Orangeville. The cenotaph was constructed in 1923. The town conveniently placed a street lamp behind the soldier’s head, making this image possible.

Alexandra Park is home to the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival, an annual music festival that has grown exponentially in popularity over the past few years.

The Dufferin County courthouse was originally completed in 1881 and has been added on to several times since.

alder street recreation centre orangeville ontario

The Alder Street Recreational Centre houses two ice rinks, an aquatic centre, a gymnastics centre, a public library branch and several conference rooms. The rec centre is also the ‘temporary’ home to a campus of Humber College.

Coupled with the two ice rinks at the much older Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre, Orangeville boasts some of the most expensive ice rentals in the country.

Alder is home to the Orangeville Flyers of the OPJHL, while Tony Rose is home to the Orangeville Northmen of the Ontario Lacrosse Association.

This is a replica of the original train station on townline road. The original sits a few blocks away and is now a Sushi Restaurant. The train station now houses the Credit Valley Explorer, a tour train that takes passengers for a three hour tour to Snelgrove (Brampton) and back.

Angie and I took the Credit Valley Explorer on a Saturday evening in September, just before leaving for New Brunswick. The food was outstanding and the view was even better. The only issue we had was that you had the same view on the way down and on the way back. The train cars remained in the same position while the engine changed ends.

The engine of the Credit Valley Explorer sits running at 11pm, ready for a busy next day.

The following is a video I made in the spring of Orangeville. It’s a simple sped up drive thru of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada.
